Attractions

Khubsgul Nuur National Park (Khubsgul)

Try to imagine a 2760 sq km alpine lake, with water so pure you can drink it. Then add dozens of mountains 2000m high or more, thick pine forest and lush meadows with grazing yaks and horses, and you have a vague impression of Khubsgul Nuur. In surface area, this is the second largest lake of Mongolia (136km long and 30km wide). Khubsgul is the deepest lake in Central Asia, up to 262m, and world’s fourteenth largest source of fresh water, containing 1 – 2% of the world’s fresh water. It is full of fish, such as lennok and sturgeon, and the area is home to argali sheep, ibex, bear, sable and moose, as well as over 200 species of birds. An amazing 96 rivers flow into the lake, while only one river flows out – the Egiin Gol, which flows into the Selenge Gol and finally reaches Lake Baikal in Siberia.

Khubsgul Nuur freezes in winter with 120cm of ice, allowing huge trucks carrying fuel to cross from Siberia. This practice was officially prohibited in the 1980s when it was realised that leaking oil from the trucks was polluting the lake. Around 40 trucks have fallen through the ice over the years.

Bayanzag (Omnogobi)

Bayanzag, which means ‘rich in saxual shrubs’, is more commonly known as the ‘Flaming cliffs’. It is known worldwide for the number of dinosaur bones and eggs found in the area. If you are not interested in dinosaur excavations you can enjoy the magnificent surrounding landscape. A little bit further in the park lays Moltsog els, a nice range of sand dunes. Also found in this area is the Saksaul Forest.

Saksaul forest only exist in central Asia and is an important vegetation feature in Mongolia. One quarter of Mongolia’s forested area is covered by this woody shrub. Especially in areas of desert and semi-desert, Saksaul forests protect the soils from erosion, provide diverse habitats for animals, fodder for wildlife and livestock and firewood for people. In the Gobi, saksaul occurs almost exclusively in pure stands, it rarely occurs together with salt-cedar. It is effective against erosion because it sends out horizontal roots in addition to very deep roots to reach the underground water.

Eagle valley, Gurvan Saikhan National Park (Omnogobi)
This park is the highlight of the province. Unlike other parks in the Gobi, this park does contain a few attractions. There are mountains, dinosaur fossils, sand dunes and a beautiful valley, which is contains ice for most of the year, even in summer. The park has a rich diversity of flora and birdlife, over 200 species of birds and over 600 species of plants.

Land & People

"In today's troubled times, however, the world desperately needs what Mongolia has to offer: an uncrowded and wide-open landsscape populated by friendly people where you can be totally cut off from the frustrations, depressions and annoyances of modern life."- said Carl Robinson in his "Mongolia Nomad Empire of Eternal Blue Sky" book. Truly, Mongolia is one of the places that you can enjoy and relax with the nature's sound, its beauty and steppes. Sensational sightseeing of flower-covered steppe, sandy dunes and bare hills, badlands and gorges rise from flat desert floors. Also, you will be welcomed with the warmth of Mongolian people and will be pleased by their kindness.
